Another Possible Reality of Our Universe
If the universe is truly doomed to remain as an isolated system, and the entropy will continue to increase indefinitely, then life is merely a spontaneous local fluctuation, which born from billions of years of chemical reactions in a solution containing enormous amounts of substances and receiving enormous amounts of energy. All life must gradually and eventually vanish like the swirls in a basin. Even human consciousness is not more than a slightly turbulent ripple.
Yet there is another possibility. Perhaps consciousness is capable of discovering principles of nature that are still beyond our understanding—principles that would allow intelligence not only to survive, but to make change. If such a future exists, then our current understanding of the universe must be incomplete: either the universe has never been truly isolated—an “outside” exists that can interfere with our world, or the second law is not final. In either case, consciousness would not simply die out as just another consequence of the universe; it would become the means by which the universe transcends what once appeared to be its own inevitable fate.
